United Torah Judaism lawmaker and Agudat Yisrael chairman Yitzhak Goldknopf commented to ynet on the reported deal between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Shas leader Aryeh Deri and Degel HaTorah chairman Moshe Gafni. He said that if there is indeed a way to stop the arrests, that would be a welcome step.
At the same time, Goldknopf said he sees little chance of a lasting change from a legal standpoint unless the Knesset passes a law that clearly regulates the status of those described as "whose Torah is their profession." He added that he understands a durable solution cannot come without such legislation.
Addressing the demonstrations planned for today, Goldknopf said organizers are making sure to act in an orderly and responsible way. According to him, the protests are being coordinated fully with the Israel Police and carried out in line with its instructions.
