Israel Reciprocates Dutch Import Restrictions with Diplomatic Measures

The Netherlands has begun inspecting the luggage of travelers arriving on direct flights from Israel at Schiphol Airport, specifically searching for products originating from Judea and Samaria, East Jerusalem, and the Golan Heights. According to the Dutch conservative publication Nieuwsrecht, these items include wine, olive oil, dates, olives, and other goods. These measures were implemented following a Dutch directive that took effect on September 22, prohibiting the import and trade of such products. The ban extends beyond commercial shipments, with Dutch customs empowered to examine gifts, souvenirs, and personal items, demand proof of origin, and confiscate goods. Violations can lead to criminal charges, including up to six years in prison.

In response, Israel has announced reciprocal diplomatic actions. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar stated that Dutch diplomats working with the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah will no longer be permitted to reside or operate within Israel. Saar informed the Dutch Embassy in Israel that these diplomats must return their Israeli-issued diplomatic documents within seven days, after which their immunities and privileges will cease. "If the Netherlands wishes to continue representing its interests to the Palestinians, it can do so from the Palestinian Authority's territory, not from the territory of the State of Israel," Saar declared.

This decision follows previous restrictive measures by Israel against Dutch representation. Last month, the activities of a Dutch mission in the Kiryat Gat international center, which focused on Gaza, were terminated.
