Tom Cruise Saves the World in New Dark Comedy 'The Digger'

The film 'The Digger,' starring Tom Cruise and directed by Oscar-winner Alejandro G. Iñárritu, is set to premiere in Israeli cinemas on October 1st, showing in Russian at Hot Cinema, Planet, and Movieland theaters. The unexpected pairing of action star Cruise with Iñárritu, known for serious dramas like 'The Revenant,' marks a departure for the director. In 'The Digger,' Cruise plays Digger Rockwell, an oil magnate who believes he is the most powerful man on Earth. When a global catastrophe unfolds, it is revealed that Rockwell himself caused it. The film follows his frantic efforts to rectify his mistake and be remembered as humanity's savior. Described as a black comedy, the movie uses a worldwide disaster as a backdrop for farce.

Iñárritu conceived the idea for 'The Digger' nearly a decade ago, shortly after 'The Revenant.' He collaborated once again with cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, who also worked on 'Birdman' and 'The Revenant,' shooting the film on 35mm film. Critical reception on Rotten Tomatoes is currently split, with a 54% score, indicating divided opinions. Reviewers have praised Cruise's committed performance and Lubezki's cinematography, but some have criticized the satire as too heavy-handed and lacking subtlety.

The cast also includes Sandra Hüller from 'Anatomy of a Fall' as Rockwell's sister and business partner, John Goodman as the U.S. President, Riz Ahmed of 'Sound of Metal,' and Jesse Plemons. Alongside 'The Digger,' Israeli theaters are also showing 'Heart of the Beast' starring Brad Pitt and the thriller 'The Courier.' Limited screenings of 'The Odyssey' and 'Spider-Man: New Day' are also concluding.
