Irish Parliament Member Calls for Boycott of Israel Soccer Match

Despite Ireland's 3-0 victory over Israel in their first Nations League match, a member of the Irish Parliament, Ruth Coppinger, has called for a boycott of the upcoming second game. Coppinger, representing People Before Profit-Solidarity, also demanded the resignation of the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) CEO and board members, criticizing their handling of the situation as "chaotic, arrogant, and incompetent."

Speaking in parliament, Coppinger urged Prime Minister Micheál Martin to agree that the FAI's leadership should step down. She argued that the players should not have been put in a position where they had to decide whether to play the match. Coppinger described the circumstances surrounding the first game as a "cauldron of racist abuse," citing alleged racist chants directed at an Irish player and references to the IDF.

Coppinger further criticized the government for not supporting the cancellation of the match, despite the Prime Minister's previous UN speech condemning Israeli actions in Gaza. She stated that the government missed a "perfect opportunity" to take a stand. While acknowledging gestures by Irish players, such as wearing black armbands and refusing handshakes with Israeli players, Coppinger deemed them insufficient, asserting that both the government and the FAI were responsible for placing the players in such a difficult situation.

The second match between Ireland and Israel is scheduled to take place next Sunday in Serbia.
