Thousands Rally to Honor Haredi Men Detained Over Draft Evasion

Thousands of Haredi men are expected to participate in an unprecedented large procession in Jerusalem to honor "prisoners of Torah world," referring to yeshiva students and married scholars arrested or handed over by Israeli police for evading military conscription. The event will feature ceremonies marking the completion of Talmudic tractates studied by the detainees in military prison and will include speeches from prominent rabbis.

A special financial grant, funded by influential overseas donors, will be presented to the detainees as a token of appreciation for their dedication to Torah study. Similar celebratory events have been held in recent months in cities like Beitar Illit and Ashdod to welcome released detainees, with large crowds gathering to express support and admiration.

In Beitar Illit, a procession and reception were held for scholars Yaakov Motzari and Yonatan Nitzotzi upon their release. In Ashdod, a similar event honored Elchanan Mizrahi, a student at the 'Tiferet Yonatan Yehoshua' yeshiva, who was labeled a "prisoner of Torah world" after his arrest and sentencing to military prison.

Another ceremony took place in Beit Shemesh for Haredi detainees who spent about a week in prison for protesting against perceived threats to the spiritual and religious sanctity of the Haredi public. Among those released were Breslov Hasidim who were arrested for religious reasons and reportedly accepted their detention with great joy.
