Zelensky Honors Holocaust Victims Amidst Heightened Security in Kyiv

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky participated in a memorial ceremony in Kyiv on September 29, marking the 85th anniversary of the Babi Yar massacre, where Nazi forces murdered 33,771 Ukrainian Jews over two days in 1941. The event, held under enhanced security measures including snipers and air defense systems, took place against the backdrop of ongoing Russian aerial attacks on the capital.

Jerusalem Post reported that the heightened security was a response to the threat of Russian drones. The ceremony occurred just hours after a large-scale Russian drone and missile attack on Ukraine the previous night, which Ukraine's Air Force stated involved 152 drones and missiles, with 109 targets intercepted. Kyiv experienced drone impacts and falling debris in several districts. A prior Russian drone attack on September 28 resulted in nine deaths and over 80 injuries across Ukraine, with one drone damaging the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine building in Kyiv.

During the ceremony, Zelensky emphasized the importance of remembering the Babi Yar victims and the value of human life, drawing parallels between the Holocaust and Russia's current war against Ukraine. "The tragedy of Babi Yar is an absolutely tragic, bloody example," Zelensky stated. The event was attended by Ukrainian officials, rabbis, leaders of Ukraine's Jewish community, and approximately 50 foreign ambassadors, including Israel's ambassador to Ukraine, as well as representatives from the US, Canada, France, Germany, the UK, Italy, and Japan.

Babi Yar was a site of mass killings throughout the German occupation, with tens of thousands of Jews, Roma, Ukrainians, and Soviet prisoners of war murdered there. The US Holocaust Memorial Museum estimates the total number of victims at Babi Yar to be around 100,000.

Also highlighted at the ceremony was the recent death of 14-year-old Israeli citizen Daniel Gumansky, who was killed in Kyiv by a Russian drone strike the previous week. His body was expected to be transported from Moldova to Israel for burial. Following the ceremony, Zelensky discussed the arrangements for transporting Gumansky's body with rabbis, according to the Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine.
