Lebanon Seeks Vatican Aid as Israel Talks Stall Amid US Pressure

Lebanon is seeking international support, including from the Vatican, to break a diplomatic deadlock in its negotiations with Israel. Prime Minister Nagib Mikati's government has dispatched former ambassador Simon Karam to Rome to enlist the Holy See's assistance in reviving the stalled talks. During a recent visit to the U.S., Prime Minister Mikati met with Secretary of State Antony Blinken, urging the establishment of a clear timeline for implementing a framework agreement and emphasizing the need to restore Lebanon's full sovereignty. However, internal political divisions persist within Lebanon.

Hezbollah, which is not participating in the current negotiation process, remains a significant obstacle. The group's Secretary-General, Naim Qassem, has sharply criticized the Lebanese authorities and reiterated Hezbollah's rejection of negotiations with Israel. This stance aligns with Lebanese opponents of Hezbollah who advocate for independent negotiations with Israel, free from Iranian influence.

The diplomatic standoff is occurring against a backdrop of heightened tensions on Lebanon's southern border. Recent Israeli military operations, including controlled explosions by the IDF near the village of Al-Mansouri, underscore the volatile security situation. The U.S. maintains a firm position against Iranian influence in Lebanon, with President Trump previously stating that eliminating Iran's influence should lead to Hezbollah's neutralization.
