Israel Escalates Southern Lebanon Operations Amid Diplomatic Push for Withdrawal

Israel has intensified its military operations in southern Lebanon, continuing artillery shelling and demolitions of homes and facilities in several towns. Israeli reports indicate the military is preparing for a new phase of operations, while Lebanon fears an escalation that could extend to the Jezzine region.

The Israeli military is reportedly reorganizing its forces and reinforcing its presence along the "Blue Line," while keeping offensive operations as an option. This comes as Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati, meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington, discussed activating the "Trilateral Framework" to restore Lebanese sovereignty. Mikati emphasized the need for practical implementation of the framework, turning principles of reciprocity and phased action into concrete steps towards a full Israeli withdrawal and consolidating arms within the state.

Rubio affirmed U.S. support for Lebanon and its legitimate institutions, stressing the importance of advancing the Trilateral Framework for security and stability. The meeting occurred amidst stalled negotiations, ongoing security tensions in the south, and discussions about the future of the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

On the ground, Israeli forces shelled the outskirts of Baraachit and the vicinity of Hadata in Bint Jbeil district. Demolition operations were carried out in Mansouri in Tyre district, with flares dropped over the town. A significant demolition also took place in Zawtar al-Sharqiyah in Nabatieh district, with other demolitions reported in Aitaroun, between Kounine and Baraachit, and in Khiam in Marjayoun district. These actions align with Israeli reports of a new military phase involving redeployment and reinforcement along the Blue Line, targeting what Israel describes as Hezbollah infrastructure.
