UK May Defy Israel's Demand to Close East Jerusalem Consulate

Britain is reportedly considering ignoring Israel's demand to close its consulate in East Jerusalem, with less than ten days remaining before the October 8 deadline set by Israeli Foreign Minister Gidon Sa'ar. The decision has not yet been finalized by the British Foreign Office, according to Middle East Eye. Sa'ar announced the closure three weeks ago as a retaliatory measure after British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband banned trade with Israeli settlements.

Former British Consul General in East Jerusalem, Sir Vincent Fean, has argued that Israel's demand is mistaken and potentially unlawful. He stated that the consulate plays a vital role in Britain's relations with Palestinians and in overseeing British aid in the region. A legal opinion commissioned in Britain reportedly concluded that Israel cannot prevent the consulate from continuing its operations.

Meanwhile, calls are intensifying within Israel to enforce the ultimatum. Jerusalem Deputy Mayor Arieh King has urged cutting off electricity and water to the consulate building, arguing that if Britain does not recognize Israeli sovereignty in the area, the consulate should not receive municipal services.
