Over 40 Nations Boycott UN Event Over Antisemitism Concerns
More than 40 countries have refused to participate in a United Nations event commemorating the 25th anniversary of the 2001 Durban anti-racism conference, citing concerns over antisemitism. Israel's Permanent Representative to the UN, Danny Danon, announced the boycott. The original 2001 Durban conference, intended to combat racism, became controversial due to widespread antisemitic and anti-Israel rhetoric.
Israel had urged member states to boycott the commemorative event, arguing it would legitimize the problematic legacy of the original forum. This year's boycott surpasses the 38 nations that boycotted a similar event in 2021.
Danon stated that the international community is sending a clear message to the UN that antisemitism and the legitimization of hatred toward Israel will not be tolerated under the guise of fighting racism. He emphasized that after 25 years, the UN must abandon the "toxic legacy" of Durban.
