MK Meir Porush Attacked at Religious Gathering Amid Internal Party Strife

Member of Knesset Meir Porush was physically assaulted by a group of rioters following a "Simchat Beit Hashoeva" (a Sukkot celebration) event in Kiryat Gat on Sunday. The attack occurred shortly after Porush, a prominent figure in the Haredi community, was seen seated with honor at the event hosted by the Kracshnef Hasidic dynasty.

Reports indicate the assault was not spontaneous, with internal communication channels, allegedly linked to the Gur Hasidic sect, calling for individuals to gather at the event due to Porush's attendance. This incident escalates a significant political crisis within the Agudat Yisrael party, occurring just hours after Porush participated in the founding convention of a new faction, "Torat Chomat Yisrael," in Bnei Brak.

At the Bnei Brak convention, Porush issued strong warnings regarding the upcoming elections. He was joined by other figures, including potential MK Elyakim Stark of the Belz Hasidic community, who emphasized the need to protect yeshiva students and kollel members and called for renewed unity to safeguard Torah institutions.

Porush has previously voiced strong criticism regarding the management of Agudat Yisrael's finances, alleging mismanagement and unfair resource allocation since his father's departure from party leadership. He stated that public funds were controlled by a single individual, leading to what he described as "utterly illogical resource allocation" and "unfair distribution of positions."

The internal tensions within Agudat Yisrael are occurring against a backdrop of reports about potential shifts in support within the Gur Hasidic community regarding a minority government led by Gadi Eisenkot. Senior Agudat Yisrael officials suggested that Yitzchak Goldknopf would abstain rather than vote against such a government, sparking speculation about a potential "break in the bloc" with Prime Minister Netanyahu. Goldknopf, however, reiterated that Agudat Yisrael would not support any government without the "regulation of the status of yeshiva students and the enactment of a conscription law without sanctions and without targets."

This violent incident in Kiryat Gat adds to a series of internal conflicts within the Haredi sector. Notably, the Council of Torah Sages recently issued a directive establishing a clear red line against attempts to infiltrate the Haredi community through various programs.
