RB Leipzig announced on Monday evening that Martin Demichelis has been hired as the club’s new head coach, less than a month after he renewed his contract with Mallorca. The Argentine is now moving to Germany despite having been expected to stay at Mallorca for about two more years.
Leipzig said the appointment in a formal statement, while Demichelis also posted a farewell message on his own social media accounts. In that message, he said goodbye to Mallorca fans and made clear that the club would be compensated for his departure.
This is the fifth coaching job of Demichelis’s career. He began with Bayern Munich’s reserve team, then spent two years at River Plate. After that he coached Monterrey in Mexico before joining Mallorca in February.
The move comes as Leipzig reshapes its bench, with Demichelis now taking over in the Bundesliga after a very short spell following his recent contract extension in Spain.
