John Paintsil Reflects on Israeli Flag Moment, Ghanaian Club Ownership

Former Israeli Premier League player John Paintsil, known for his time with Maccabi Tel Aviv and Hapoel Tel Aviv, recently spoke about his career and current ventures. Paintsil, who played in Israel between 2002 and 2010, recalled his iconic moment at the 2006 World Cup where he waved an Israeli flag after a Ghana goal, an act he stated was a gesture of appreciation for Hapoel Tel Aviv fans and not political. He believes this gesture contributed to the ongoing sale of Israeli flags in Ghana.

Paintsil is now the owner of Legon Cities FC, a team in Ghana's top league, where he focuses on developing young talent for potential moves to Europe. He maintains contact with former coach Nir Klinger, now at Hapoel Tel Aviv, and has offered players to the club, hoping to see Ghanaian talent develop in Israel as he did.

Beyond his ownership role, Paintsil has faced legal troubles in Ghana since 2016. He was accused by his former partner of stealing her car, and during a police investigation, he allegedly assaulted an officer. He was subsequently tried on charges including assault and threats, receiving a lenient sentence.

Additionally, Paintsil is involved in a legal dispute with former Ghanaian national teammate Derek Boateng over a $20,000 loan from the 2010 World Cup that Paintsil allegedly never repaid. Paintsil expressed disappointment in Boateng's actions, stating that while they were once close friends, Boateng has since acted disrespectfully.
