West Bank Escalation Driven by Ideology, Elections, and Global Distraction, Expert Says

Recent Israeli escalations and movements in the West Bank are driven by three main factors: settlement ideology, domestic electoral calculations, and the exploitation of international preoccupation with regional crises to impose a new reality on the ground, according to Professor Ayman Youssef, a specialist in political science and international relations. In a special interview with i24NEWS, Youssef explained that the current Israeli government relies on policies of closure, settlement expansion, and pressure on Palestinians to reassure settlers and mobilize right-wing support for upcoming elections, while taking advantage of the international community's shifting focus to other regional issues.

Youssef noted a broad structural consensus across the Israeli political spectrum, including government figures and opposition leaders, against the establishment of a Palestinian state or the evacuation of settlements. This reflects a general trend towards imposing settlement policies and limited self-rule. Internationally, he observed that the Palestinian narrative is gaining traction in international forums and the UN General Assembly, while the Israeli narrative is declining. He pointed to increasing international boycott movements and critical stances in Europe and Latin America following the war on Gaza and the West Bank, suggesting this is the beginning of a growing snowball effect against Israeli policies.

Regarding the situation in the Jenin governorate, Youssef stated that the city and its immediate rural surroundings are under a severe lockdown, with the establishment of 18 to 20 military gates and checkpoints and a heavy Israeli troop presence. He added that recent operations have led to the displacement of thousands of citizens from the Jenin refugee camp, with operations expanding to include surrounding villages and the countryside. These actions are part of an effort to impose complete control and establish a new settlement and security reality in the area.
