Updated Google Maps Satellite Images Reveal Extent of Gaza Destruction

New satellite imagery recently updated on Google Maps visually demonstrates the vast scale of destruction in the Gaza Strip, showing entire urban areas reduced to flat, debris-covered expanses. The images highlight newly opened streets cutting through former dense neighborhoods, while business, school, and mosque markers persist on the map for structures that no longer exist.

The update has sparked widespread reactions on social media from Palestinian users and journalists. Journalist Abu Bakr Abd noted on X that despite witnessing the destruction firsthand, viewing the consolidated map was heartbreaking, particularly illustrating the harsh reality in areas like Khan Younis, Rafah, and around the Al-Shifa Hospital complex, which has become an empty shell.

These new visuals align with grim data released by international bodies, including a UN report from September 24th estimating that approximately 1.9 million people have been displaced and over 60 percent of the population has lost their property. International organizations and professionals estimate that rebuilding the Strip will cost an enormous $71.5 billion, given that 92 percent of economic institutions have been damaged and hundreds of thousands of housing units have been harmed or destroyed since October 2023.
