The Dallas Mavericks have found a replacement for Jason Kidd, who left the job about a month ago. On Monday, Michigan coach Dusty May reached an agreement to become Dallas’ new head coach, according to NBA insider Shams Charania.
May led Michigan this past season and guided the program to the NCAA championship. The move marks the first time since 2019 that a college coach has jumped directly to the NBA, when another Michigan coach, John Beilein, moved to Cleveland.
Charania said the hiring is expected to affect both the NBA and the NCAA, potentially setting off a chain reaction of coaching appointments. For May, it is also a major step up in his career, as he will now coach the Mavericks and their young star Cooper Flagg.
