Irish Goalkeeper Criticized by Nigerians for Israel Boycott

Gavin Bazunu, the goalkeeper for the Republic of Ireland national football team, is facing backlash from Nigerian social media users following his decision to boycott upcoming matches against Israel. Bazunu had stated his refusal to play due to opposition to harm against innocent people, clarifying that his stance was personal and not directed against the Israeli or Jewish people, but rather the conflict in the region.

However, users and prominent accounts from Nigeria, the country of Bazunu's father, have accused him of hypocrisy and selective morality. They questioned why he had not taken a similar stance regarding the ongoing violence and terrorism within Nigeria, particularly the persecution of Christians. Social media posts highlighted the thousands killed in Nigeria and asked if Bazunu would protest the atrocities committed by terrorist groups there.

This criticism comes amid Nigeria's persistent security crisis. Data from the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom indicates that tens of thousands have died in Nigeria since 2009 due to religiously and ethnically motivated violence and terrorism, with groups like Boko Haram and ISIS in West Africa being major perpetrators. Open Doors, an organization monitoring Christian persecution, also identifies Nigeria as one of the deadliest countries for Christians globally, reporting that most Christians killed worldwide for their faith in the past year died in Nigeria.
