Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday that the IDF has full freedom of action in southern Lebanon to neutralize threats to Israeli troops and northern residents, and that the government’s policy on the matter has not changed.
In a statement, Netanyahu said, “The instruction from me and the defense minister to the IDF is clear and has not changed: our fighters in southern Lebanon have full freedom of action to thwart any direct or emerging threat to them or to the residents of the north. The IDF has no restrictions on this matter.” He added that he gives the forces in the field full backing, saying, “I stand behind them, the entire people stand behind them.”
Netanyahu also addressed Israel’s future presence in southern Lebanon, saying Israel will keep the security belt there as long as necessary for defense. He said, “I am firm on remaining in the security zone in southern Lebanon as long as needed to protect the residents of the north and all citizens of the state.”
