Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a forceful statement on Monday clarifying Israel’s security policy and the continued ground operations of the IDF in the northern sector. He said the instructions from him and Defense Minister to the army “have not changed” and were meant to dispel reports that troops in the field might face restrictions.
Netanyahu said, “Our fighters in southern Lebanon have full freedom of action to thwart any direct or emerging threat to them or to the residents of the north.” He added that the IDF has “no restriction in this matter,” making clear that commanders on the ground are authorized to act against threats as they see fit.
He also sent a message of support to the troops fighting Hezbollah, saying, “I stand behind them, the whole nation stands behind them.” In his remarks, Netanyahu stressed that Israel will not rush to withdraw from the areas it has taken and will keep the security buffer in place for as long as necessary.
“I stand firm on remaining in the security strip in southern Lebanon as long as needed to protect the residents of the north and all citizens of the state,” he said. The statement comes amid continuing political and military discussions over a permanent security arrangement that would allow northern residents to return home safely.
