Supreme Court Rejects Bid to Disqualify Ex-Shin Bet Chief Yoram Cohen from Knesset
Israel's Supreme Court has rejected a petition seeking to disqualify Yoram Cohen, former head of the Shin Bet security agency, from running for the Knesset (parliament) as a candidate for the 'Yashar' party. The petition was dismissed without a hearing by a panel of justices including Supreme Court President Isaac Amit, Ofer Grosskopf, and Khaled Kabub.
The justices upheld the decision of the Central Elections Committee chairman, Judge Noam Sohlberg, who had previously rejected the petition. The court also ordered the petitioners to pay 3,000 shekels in legal costs.
The petition was filed by activists from the 'Justice for Amiram' campaign, represented by attorney Rachavia Pilz. They protested Cohen's role as Shin Bet chief during the investigations and alleged harsh interrogations, including torture, of Amiram Ben-Uliel and a minor in connection with the Duma village arson attack.
"A person who enabled severe human rights violations, and the most blatant trampling of suspects' rights and extraction of confessions by force, is not fit to serve in the Knesset," the petitioners stated, adding that "no Supreme Court decision will cleanse the moral stain that rests on Yoram Cohen."
