Hamas Succession Battle Reignites for Gaza Leadership

Hamas is set to hold a runoff election this week for the leadership of its political bureau in the Gaza Strip, following an inconclusive first round held several weeks ago. The internal contest for control of the organization's Gaza leadership is intensifying.

The two contenders are Nizar Awadallah and Ali al-Amodi, both members of the political bureau. Neither candidate secured the necessary majority in the initial vote, partly due to some eligible voters casting blank ballots. Reports indicate a behind-the-scenes power struggle among senior Hamas officials.

Khaled Meshaal has reportedly been lobbying members of the Shura Council, Hamas's consultative body, to garner support for Awadallah. Zahir Jabarin, who oversees Hamas's West Bank affairs, also backs Awadallah. Awadallah is considered a veteran figure within Hamas, having been close to founders Ahmed Yassin and Abdel Aziz al-Rantisi, and previously challenged Yahya Sinwar for leadership in 2021.

Conversely, al-Amodi is reportedly supported by the current head of Hamas's political bureau, Khalil al-Hayya. Al-Amodi is described as having been close to the late Yahya Sinwar since their time together in Israeli prison. While al-Amodi initially held a stronger position, sources suggest shifts in support among voters in recent weeks have bolstered Awadallah's chances for the runoff.

According to Saudi media, this leadership contest is part of a broader reorganization within Hamas's top ranks following the ongoing war and the elimination of several key figures. Regional developments, including recent incidents involving Iran and Hezbollah, have also prompted Hamas to reassess its internal power balance and strategic direction.
