FIFA Rules Bar Finn Azaz from Switching Allegiance to Israel

Finn Azaz, a Southampton player representing the Republic of Ireland national football team, will not be eligible to play for Israel even if he is dropped from the Irish squad. Azaz, whose mother is Israeli, has played 14 official matches for Ireland since turning 21, exceeding the limits set by FIFA regulations for players seeking to change national team allegiance.

FIFA's rules permit a player to switch national teams only under strict conditions. These include having been under 21 at the time of their last senior national team appearance, having made no more than three senior appearances, and waiting at least three years since their last cap, without having played in a World Cup or continental championship finals.

Azaz fails to meet these criteria. His first official appearance for Ireland occurred after he passed the age of 21, and his subsequent 14 appearances, including in the UEFA Nations League and World Cup qualifiers, solidify his status with the Irish team. Consequently, even if the Irish Football Association decides not to select him further, FIFA's regulations prevent him from representing another nation.

This situation contrasts with that of Declan Rice, who was able to switch from Ireland to England because his three appearances for Ireland were all in friendly matches, not official competitions. As Azaz has played in official matches, he is bound by FIFA's rules.

An exception exists if Azaz were to permanently lose his Irish citizenship involuntarily due to a governmental decision, allowing him to apply to FIFA to represent another nation he holds citizenship in. However, this would still require a formal application and FIFA approval, and is not related to professional team decisions.
