Ireland Lists Defender as Goalkeeper Ahead of Match Against Israel

The Republic of Ireland national football team has taken an unusual step by registering a defender as a goalkeeper for their upcoming match against Israel. This decision stems from a UEFA regulation requiring teams to list three goalkeepers on their matchday squad. The situation arose after Ireland's primary goalkeeper, Gavin Bazunu, announced he would not participate in the games against Israel due to personal beliefs.

To comply with UEFA's rules, Jimmy Dunne, a defender for Queens Park Rangers, has been officially listed as a goalkeeper on the UEFA website. Dunne, 28, has been assigned the number 23 for this registration, appearing alongside regular goalkeepers Caoimhin Kelleher and Mark Travers. This move is a technical solution to meet the tournament's requirements, and it is not expected that Dunne will actually play in goal.

The controversy surrounding Bazunu's withdrawal has caused significant disruption within the Irish camp. Following his announcement, extensive discussions and a vote among the squad led to the decision to proceed with the match against Israel. Bazunu did not participate in the team's final training session, which only included Kelleher and Travers among the goalkeepers.
