Israeli Finance Minister Calls for West Bank Military Operation, Dismantling Palestinian Authority

Israeli Finance Minister and Religious Zionism party leader Bezalel Smotrich has called for a broad military operation in the West Bank, advocating for measures similar to those taken in Gaza, including the dismantling of the Palestinian Authority, which he labeled a "terrorist authority." Smotrich's remarks were made during an interview with the "120 and One" podcast from the Walla! news site, amid warnings of escalating tensions in the West Bank.

Smotrich stated his belief in the necessity of "going to war in the West Bank," aiming to eliminate the infrastructure of armed factions and collect weapons. He suggested the Israeli military should handle the West Bank as it has Gaza. He also commented on upcoming elections, criticizing former officer Ofer Winter's participation, suggesting it could cost votes on the right.

Regarding the October 7th events, Smotrich acknowledged "collective responsibility" as a minister in the government during which the attacks occurred, stating he has borne this responsibility since then. The minister also discussed security budget issues, crime within the Arab community, and his plans for the Negev and Galilee regions. He expressed a desire to tighten penalties for illegal weapons possession and combat what he described as the "khawa" phenomenon, a form of extortion.
