Negev Women Establish Advisory Council to Boost Public Life and Knesset Representation

An inaugural conference in Rahat concluded Saturday with the establishment of the Negev Women's Advisory Council. The council aims to create a continuous framework to enhance women's participation in public life and decision-making, drawing women from across the Negev, including those in unrecognized villages.

The council's vision is to unite women from diverse Negev backgrounds and experiences, working systematically on issues affecting their lives and promoting their engagement in upcoming elections and the broader public sphere. The founding conference featured discussions on the challenges faced by Negev women and strategies for transforming daily concerns into organized, ongoing women-led initiatives.

Key issues the council plans to address include land and housing, home demolitions, unrecognized villages, education, services, employment, transportation, and safety, with a particular focus on the unique challenges in unrecognized villages. Participants emphasized the importance of women's presence in influential positions and decision-making roles, advocating for their issues and experiences to be integral to public discourse and policy formulation.

The conference also highlighted the significance of women's participation in future elections as a tool for expressing their priorities and shaping political representation. Following the conference, the council will expand its network of coordinators throughout the Negev and establish communication channels to advance women's issues and participation.

The preparatory committee stated that the council's formation marks the beginning of sustained women's action, with future efforts focused on broadening participation, organization, and addressing the challenges confronting women in the Negev.
