Israel Considers Acquiring Boeing P-8 Poseidon Maritime Patrol Aircraft

The Israeli Navy is considering the acquisition of the Boeing P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft as part of its future strategic plan, aiming to enhance its anti-submarine warfare capabilities and extend operational reach beyond Israeli coastlines. This move comes amid growing concerns over increased naval activity in the Mediterranean, Red Sea, and Gulf regions, particularly in the context of rising tensions with Iran and the Houthis.

Sources within the Israeli Ministry of Defense confirm that the acquisition is under serious consideration. Navy Commander Vice Admiral Eyal Harel reportedly met with a senior Boeing official several weeks ago to discuss advanced technologies and weapon systems. The P-8 Poseidon, built on the Boeing 737 platform, is equipped with sophisticated intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance systems, including acoustic sensors for submarine detection. It can also carry torpedoes and anti-ship or land-attack missiles.

The potential acquisition is significant as Israel currently operates six submarines, with two more planned or under construction. Defense officials are evaluating whether the P-8s would increase the submarine fleet to eight or replace older vessels. The United States would need to approve any sale, which would make Israel the first country in the Middle East to operate the P-8 Poseidon.
