British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced his resignation after nearly two years in office, making him the sixth British prime minister to change in the past decade. In his statement, he first reviewed what he described as his achievements in government, including, in his words, the “eradication of antisemitic poison” and strengthening the economy.
Starmer said the central question facing his party was whether he was the best person to lead it into the next election. “My decision was based on the good of the country, and therefore I will resign as leader of the Labour Party,” he said. He added that he had already submitted his resignation to the king.
Starmer said he would give his successor his full support. Speaking emotionally, he said he would now focus on being “the best husband I can be and the best father.”
