Yinon Magal: A Controversial Israeli Media Personality's Career and Public Statements
Yinon Magal, host of Channel 14's flagship program 'The Patriots,' has a career marked by significant media roles, a brief stint in politics, and numerous controversial public statements. Magal, a former anchor for "Mabat" and a former Knesset member for the Jewish Home party, has hosted "The Patriots" since June 2019. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has appeared on the program at least six times since 2023.
Magal's career began after his military service in Sayeret Matkal. He worked at various media outlets, including Galei Tzahal, Channel 10, and the First Channel, where he co-hosted "Mabat" from 2008 to 2012. He then served as the chief editor of the Walla! news website from 2013 to 2014. In 2015, he was elected to the Knesset for the Jewish Home party but resigned later that year amid allegations of sexual harassment, though a police investigation was subsequently closed. In 2023, he testified as a witness for the prosecution in Case 4000, related to the Netanyahu trial, stating that content was removed at Walla! due to political pressure.
In January 2022, Magal initiated a crowdfunding campaign for Netanyahu's legal expenses, which raised approximately 3.9 million shekels. He has described himself as a "tool" through which Netanyahu communicates with the public and stated his support for Netanyahu stems from personal belief, calling himself a "Bibi-ist." Netanyahu himself reportedly asked Magal to return to politics, a request Magal declined.
Magal has faced numerous public and legal challenges. In August 2026, a court ruled that a statement he made about Channel 12 journalist Guy Peleg was untrue and that Magal had not verified its accuracy, ordering him to pay compensation. He has also been criticized for remarks made on air, including comments about residents of Tamra following an Iranian missile strike and a controversial statement regarding journalists in 2020, which he later described as satire. In July 2024, he was suspended from 103FM radio after leading a campaign against Bank Leumi. Regulatory bodies have also initiated proceedings against him and Channel 14 for various on-air statements.
Magal's public persona is characterized by strong, often provocative, opinions. He has been a vocal supporter of Netanyahu and a critic of those opposing him, frequently engaging in heated debates on his radio show and television program. His career trajectory reflects a consistent presence in Israeli media, coupled with a pattern of controversial statements and legal entanglements.
