Radical Lawyers Forum Condemns Disqualification of Arab Lists, MKs

The Radical Lawyers Forum has strongly condemned the Central Elections Committee's decisions to disqualify the Joint List and the Unified List, along with candidates MK Dr. Ofer Cassif and Sami Abu Shehadeh. The forum described the disqualifications as a "grave blow to fundamental democratic rights," including the rights to run for office, vote, political representation, and freedom of political expression.

The forum asserted that the "wholesale disqualification" of lists representing the Arab community signals the ruling "fascism of the Zionist consensus" is increasingly rejecting anything Arab on "purely racist grounds." They believe this aims to delegitimize parties representing the Arab public, paving the way to delegitimize the Arab population itself and their right to exist and develop on their ancestral land.

The forum emphasized that the right to vote and run for office is a cornerstone of democracy, not a privilege granted by a majority. They highlighted the particular importance of political expression during elections, as it protects dissenting and critical viewpoints.

While acknowledging that Basic Law: The Knesset allows for disqualifications in specific cases, the forum argued that such actions are an "exceptional and dangerous" measure that directly infringves on basic political rights. They stated it should not be used as a political tool to exclude opponents, political currents, or an entire community based on their opposition to the occupation, racism, or Jewish supremacy.

The forum expressed particular concern about the disqualification of Sami Abu Shehadeh and the vote by Central Elections Committee Chairman Judge Noam Sohlberg, seeing it as potentially significant for future judicial proceedings. They also rejected the disqualification of MK Dr. Ofer Cassif and the political lists representing the Arab community and the democratic Jewish public.

Concluding their statement, the Radical Lawyers Forum called for the "cancellation of the disqualification decisions" and the defense of "what remains of the democratic space, freedom of expression, and political representation." They urged a response to what they termed an "unprecedented attack" by increasing votes in the upcoming elections to "impose our presence and strength" and enable citizens to defend themselves and their future.
