Wizz Air announces temporary suspension of flights to Israel
Wizz Air announced a temporary suspension of its flights to Israel today, Monday, and tomorrow, in response to the renewed fighting with Iran. The Hungarian low-cost carrier added that flights are expected to resume on June 10, subject to a situation assessment. The company said that “the safety and security of passengers and crew remain the company’s top priority, and it continues to monitor the evolving situation closely in coordination with the relevant authorities.”
Polish airline LOT updated that two flights had been canceled, but for now the rest of the company’s flights are expected to depart as scheduled. Earlier, El Al offered passengers holding tickets for flights until June 13 a free postponement or a voucher, while Air Haifa will allow cancellations and credit for flights until June 9.
The Israel Airports Authority said Ben Gurion Airport and Haifa Airport are operating as usual, following a situation assessment held by Transportation Minister Miri Regev. Home Front Command called for stricter guidelines and a crowd limit of up to 2,500 passengers at Ben Gurion Airport, but the Transportation Ministry is seeking to set a limit of 5,000 passengers. The authority said: “We recommend that passengers check with the airlines and follow updates on the official information channels.”
Transportation Ministry Director General Moshe Ben Zaken said: “At Ben Gurion, things are operating as usual. We persuaded airlines that wanted to cancel flights that there is no need, and we are in continuous contact with them. There are a few companies that canceled.” He added, “A Wizz Air plane was afraid to land in the country and landed in Larnaca. We are in contact with the passengers and will make sure they get to Israel on another flight.”
