Religious Education Budget Crisis Eased as NIS 30 Million Released

A significant victory has been achieved for religious educational institutions in Israel following months of advocacy by the Religious Education Forum, which includes the Bnei Akiva Yeshivot and Ulpanot Center and the Noam-Tzevi network. The forum's efforts, supported by legal and public campaigns, have led to the release of NIS 30 million that had been frozen.

During the period the funds were withheld, these educational institutions were forced to rely on loans and independent funding to cover teacher salaries, religious studies, and identity programs. The release of these funds addresses the immediate financial crisis but is considered a temporary solution.

Fundamental legal challenges regarding the budgeting of state-religious education are ongoing in the High Court of Justice. In early November, the Ministry of Education is required to update the court on its progress in establishing a permanent funding arrangement for these institutions. The primary responsibility now rests with Education Minister Yoav Kisch to prepare for the upcoming court discussion, finalize the necessary planning, and present a clear, professional position to the court that supports the required funding for state-religious education.

The Religious Education Forum expressed gratitude for the release of the funds, acknowledging the involvement of Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich in facilitating the solution. However, they emphasized that the larger battle for permanent funding is yet to come. They stressed the need for Minister Kisch to establish a lasting arrangement to prevent the state-religious education system from facing similar funding uncertainties in the future.
