National Security Minister Ben-Gvir Defends Gun Licensing, Pledges More

Israel's National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir stated his belief that widespread gun ownership saves lives and expressed pride in having already issued 300,000 firearm licenses. Speaking on the "Election Tour" podcast by the Walla! website, Ben-Gvir outlined his vision to provide a firearm to every individual who has served in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), asserting this would help combat crime.

During the podcast, Ben-Gvir was questioned by social media influencer Lidor Madmoni about the distribution of keychain bottle openers shaped like handguns to high school students. Madmoni expressed concern that this could lead to increased attempts to acquire real weapons. Ben-Gvir dismissed the concern, reiterating his support for broader gun access and stating his desire for all IDF veterans to receive a weapon, questioning why only he should carry one.

Madmoni reacted strongly, comparing the situation to the video game Grand Theft Auto VI. Ben-Gvir countered that he was promoting a "normal reality" for the Middle East, emphasizing that "a gun saves lives." He proudly announced the 300,000 licenses already issued under his tenure.

This discussion follows a petition filed on Wednesday with the Central Elections Committee chairman. The petition, submitted by the Israeli Movement for Progressive Judaism, seeks an injunction against Ben-Gvir and his party, Otzma Yehudit, to halt the distribution of the pistol-shaped bottle openers. These openers feature Ben-Gvir's image, the party's symbol, and the slogan "A gun saves lives."
