Israel Welcomes Colombia's Severing of Ties with Iran

Israel's Ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, praised Colombia's decision to sever diplomatic relations with Iran, calling it a significant step against the Tehran regime. Danon stated that the move is important in confronting a government he claims suppresses its citizens, supports terrorist organizations, and undermines regional stability. He urged other nations to consider similar actions toward Iran.

The Colombian Foreign Ministry announced that the severance of diplomatic ties with Iran took effect on September 19. The official statement cited national and regional security concerns, the fight against cross-border crime, and suspicions regarding links between the Iranian government and terrorist groups and armed criminal elements as reasons for the decision. Colombia also pointed to Iran's human rights violations, its regional activities, the blocking of the Strait of Hormuz, and obstacles to the International Atomic Energy Agency's inspections as contributing factors.

However, the ministry clarified that the severance of diplomatic relations does not currently include a complete break in consular ties. The decision was also welcomed by other Israeli representatives. Israel's Ambassador to Colombia, Vered Iris, expressed her congratulations to the Colombian government and hoped the move would contribute to the country's security.

Bogota's decision marks a significant shift in relations between the two countries, which have maintained diplomatic ties for decades. The practical implications of this move, including the status of diplomatic missions and personnel, are now expected to be addressed.
