UC Berkeley Offers Job to Israeli Dance Researcher After Discrimination Finding
The University of California, Berkeley, will offer a teaching position to an Israeli dance researcher as part of a settlement agreement, following a determination by the Trump administration that she faced discrimination based on her national identity. Dr. Yael Natif, chair of the Choreographers Association in Israel, was teaching at the university as a visiting lecturer. After October 7, the head of the dance department informed her she would not be rehired, citing concerns that doing so would anger students and place the department in a "problematic" situation.
Following the incident, Natif sued the university. As part of the settlement, Berkeley acknowledged its actions, apologized to Natif, and extended an invitation for her to return to campus. The university has agreed to offer her a teaching position.
