Mafia Hit Solved in Hours After Killer's Restaurant Surveillance

Israeli police have arrested Doron Weizman, suspected of assassinating Yiannis Yushbayev, identified as the head of the Caucasian mafia, in a meticulously planned hit near Caesarea on August 23, 2026. Security camera footage from the "Agenda" restaurant at the Caesarea junction revealed that Weizman spent approximately 30 minutes inside, ordering food and observing Yushbayev, who arrived later with associates. As Yushbayev exited the restaurant, Weizman approached him and fired a single shot to the head before fleeing the scene.

Despite the seemingly professional execution, Weizman's actions were extensively captured by surveillance cameras and forensic evidence left at the scene, including DNA on a chair, cigarette butts, and a drinking glass. This evidence allowed investigators to identify him within hours. Police confirmed that Weizman, a known criminal from Kiryat Shmona, did not wear a mask during the act, contrary to some initial reports, but did wear a hat.

Weizman was apprehended less than 48 hours after the murder in a residential building in Hadera. The arrest was carried out by the elite Yamam counter-terrorism unit due to concerns he might still be armed. He was found in a room and offered no resistance, initially providing false identification. The getaway vehicle, a stolen car, was found abandoned about two kilometers from the scene five days after the murder.

The murder weapon and the clothes Weizman wore have not been recovered. Investigators believe Weizman acted alone in carrying out the shooting but suspect he was hired by others. The motive for the assassination remains unclear, as does the connection between Weizman and Yushbayev, and whether a payment was made. While a suspect who had arranged to meet Yushbayev at the restaurant was arrested and questioned, no evidence has yet linked him to planning the hit.

An indictment is expected to be filed against Weizman by the Haifa District Prosecutor's Office. However, police emphasize that the investigation is ongoing to identify the individual who ordered the assassination and any other potential accomplices.
