France Defends Allowing Netanyahu's Plane Passage Amid ICC Arrest Warrant
France has defended its decision to permit Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's plane to fly through its airspace en route to New York. A French Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Pascal Confavreux, stated that the overflight authorization was "fully in line with international law." He explained that the Rome Statute, which governs the International Criminal Court (ICC), does not mandate the detention of individuals subject to an ICC arrest warrant when traveling on state aircraft.
Netanyahu's flight to the UN General Assembly passed over Greece, Italy, and France, all of which are signatories to the Rome Statute. The ICC issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant in November 2024. Israel rejects these charges and disputes the court's jurisdiction.
Netanyahu arrived in New York on September 24 and is scheduled to address the UN General Assembly.
