Irish Fans May Protest Israel Match Against Austria in Dublin
Irish football fans planning to protest against their national team's matches against Israel may focus their demonstrations during the UEFA Nations League game against Austria in Dublin on October 1. Reports from Ireland and Austria suggest that this match, scheduled for October 1 at the Aviva Stadium, is seen as the primary remaining venue for fans to voice their opposition to the Irish Football Association's decision to play the games against Israel.
The fear of disruptions has prompted unusual measures from the Irish FA. Hundreds of fans with tickets in the front rows of several stands have been moved to premium seating at no extra cost. While the association officially cited security measures for Euro 2028 as the reason, citing the Austria match as a test event, sources admitted to The Irish Times that moving fans away from the pitch would also ease security in case of pitch invasions.
This concern stems from a previous protest during a friendly match against Qatar in May, where numerous tennis balls were thrown onto the pitch with Palestinian flags and "Stop The Game" messages, accompanied by "Free Palestine" chants. The match was halted multiple times. The "Stop The Game" campaign has indicated that further protests are possible during the Austria game, viewing it as a key opportunity to be heard since the actual matches against Israel will not be held in Ireland.
The first match against Israel is set for September 27 in Debrecen, Hungary, with no tickets allocated to Irish fans. The "home" fixture on October 4 has been moved to Bačka Topola, Serbia, and will be played behind closed doors. Austrian media also highlight the tension, with one report suggesting the Dublin game could be overshadowed by protests. An Irish journalist told an Austrian outlet that the Austria match is the "only forum left" for fans to express themselves, emphasizing that anger is directed at the Irish FA, UEFA, and Israel, not the Austrian team.
The Irish FA is concerned that repeated stadium disruptions could lead to the match's abandonment and a technical loss. FAI CEO David Corcoran appealed to fans for quiet protest, stating, "We fully support quiet protest, but I would ask the real fans in the stadium to understand that disrupting the game will achieve nothing."
