The World Cup 2026 picture became much clearer, and much more complicated, after the overnight matches from Sunday into Monday completed the second round in two more groups. Sports5 said the results put two experienced teams under pressure as the tournament moves toward its final round of group games.
In Group G, Egypt lead with 4 points and a +2 goal difference. Iran and Belgium each have 2 points, while New Zealand have 1 point and a -2 goal difference. The remaining fixtures are Egypt against Iran and New Zealand against Belgium. It is one of the tightest groups in the tournament, with no team yet assured of qualification and no team eliminated. Belgium still control their fate, and a win would send them through automatically after struggling in their first two matches. Egypt are in a very strong position and have effectively secured advancement, while Iran may find that a draw will not be enough.
In Group H, Spain also have 4 points and a +4 goal difference, followed by Uruguay and Cape Verde on 2 points each, and Saudi Arabia on 1 point with a -4 goal difference. The last matches are Cape Verde against Saudi Arabia and Uruguay against Spain. Cape Verde are in a very favorable position and could even advance with a draw against the group’s weakest side. Spain have effectively booked a place in the next round but are aiming to finish first, while experienced Uruguay risk an early exit.
