Top Rabbi Condemns Violence Against Peer as 'False Zealotry'

Rabbi Moshe Hillel Hirsch, a prominent Lithuanian yeshiva leader, has sent a strong letter of support to Rabbi Eliyahu Meir Fabelzon, head of the P'tei Olam yeshiva, following a series of disruptions to Fabelzon's classes by extremists. Rabbi Hirsch sharply condemned the violence, labeling it "false zealotry" and stating that it causes "desecration of God's name."

Rabbi Hirsch encouraged Rabbi Fabelzon to continue his educational work, teaching Torah and wisdom to his students and drawing them closer to God. The letter comes amid recent months of repeated attacks on Fabelzon's lectures and activities. Notably, on the recent Tisha B'Av fast day, extremists disrupted the recitation of Kinot (elegies) in the study hall, an event that caused significant shock within the Torah world.

Rabbi Hirsch's letter joins similar expressions of support from other senior yeshiva leaders for Rabbi Fabelzon. The current events have raised concerns within the yeshiva world regarding the phenomenon of violence directed at rabbis and Torah disseminators. Leaders in the Torah world have strongly condemned such actions, which have occurred in previous instances against other rabbis and public figures.

Rabbi Fabelzon is recognized as a leading disciple of the late Rabbi Moshe Shapira and a prominent figure in the "Halaki Be'kehilati" community. In recent years, he has gained a special status in the Torah world as a disseminator of Torah and a strengthener of faith. Rabbi Hirsch's letter is seen as a clear message supporting Fabelzon's continued educational and outreach efforts and opposing the "despicable behavior" of extremist elements on the fringes of the community.
