Chabad Melody 'Rachmana' Reimagined with Funk Beat by Efraim Markowitz and Gershy Uri

Keyboardist and arranger Efraim Markowitz has released a surprising new rendition of the classic Chabad niggun (melody) 'Rachmana,' featuring singer Gershy Uri. The project offers a unique interpretation of the well-known tune, blending traditional elements with a modern and challenging arrangement.

The original melody, created by the Chabad Hasidic movement, is commonly heard in Jewish homes, particularly during the High Holidays and Sukkot period. Markowitz's arrangement maintains the familiar traditional feel in its first part, then transitions to a distinct and refreshing 7/8 tempo, a rhythm characteristic of funk music, giving the song a unique identity.

Markowitz himself handled the concept, arrangement, and mixing, leveraging his experience to create a rich and emotional soundscape. The vocals are performed by Markowitz and Uri. The accompanying music video was filmed by Yossi Bent and edited by Schneor Eisenbach. Recordings took place at Tenor Studios in Israel and Volume Studio in the UK.

This release joins a wave of new musical works appearing ahead of the Hebrew month of Tishrei, a period of repentance and divine mercy, which serves as a fitting spiritual backdrop for the niggun's profound message. Other recent releases include Yanky Rosenbaum's 'Olu Ushpizin' for Sukkot, Ofer Halevi's 'Hakol Zeh Siyata Dishmaya,' and Yoely Davidowitz's debut album 'Ananim.' Markowitz specifically thanked Avrahami Neulander for his continuous support of the project.
