Israel Halts Bus Stop Named After Yasser Arafat Following Media Report

Following a report by Channel 14, Israel's Transportation Minister Miri Regev has ordered an immediate halt to bus services at a stop named after Yasser Arafat in the town of Jatt. Regev stated that there is no place for honoring enemies of the Jewish nation in public spaces.

The decision came after the media outlet revealed the existence of the bus stop bearing the name of the former Palestinian leader. Regev emphasized that Arafat, as a leader of the PLO, bore direct responsibility for numerous deadly attacks and the murder of many Israelis.

This is not the first time Regev has opposed naming public spaces after Arafat. In 2013, while chairing the Knesset's Interior Committee, she strongly objected to a request from the Sakhnin municipality to name a street after him.

The Ministry of Transportation will provide an alternative bus stop for residents on a different, suitable street. The ministry assured that residents would not be negatively impacted and would receive adequate public transportation service. Regev concluded that honoring Israel's enemies in public spaces must be rectified immediately for the safety and security of the country's citizens.
