Child Dies From Rare Brain-Eating Amoeba After Swimming in Sea of Galilee
The Israeli Ministry of Health announced with sorrow the death of a child who had been hospitalized at Rambam Medical Center. The child contracted a rare amoebic brain infection, identified as Naegleria fowleri, which ultimately proved fatal. The ministry extended its condolences to the grieving family.
Laboratory tests conducted by the Ministry of Health confirmed the presence of the Naegleria fowleri amoeba. An epidemiological investigation revealed that the child had swum in the Kinneret (Sea of Galilee) at the Kursi beach approximately one week prior to being admitted to the hospital.
This type of infection is extremely rare, with fewer than 500 cases reported globally throughout history. In Israel, three cases have been diagnosed in recent years. The ministry is participating in the family's deep sorrow.
