Israel's Standards Institute to Raise Import Testing Fees Significantly

Israel's Standards Institute is set to increase fees for import testing and work hours starting October 1st. According to Channel 12 News, the average price hike will be around 5%, with some services seeing an increase of up to 12%. This rise is expected to affect a wide array of imported products, including food, toiletries, cosmetics, toys, and household goods, which require testing to meet Israeli standards.

The Standards Institute provides laboratory and testing services to importers to ensure compliance with Israeli regulations. Industry professionals anticipate that importers will likely pass on at least some of these increased costs to consumers, potentially leading to higher shelf prices. However, there is currently no official estimate on the exact price increase per product, or if all products will be affected equally. Some imported items may be exempt or face reduced testing due to streamlined processes or recognition of foreign standards, part of ongoing reforms aimed at reducing import barriers and duplicate testing.

The Ministry of Economy has promoted its standardization policies in recent years as a measure to ease imports and lower the cost of living. The new fee schedule is scheduled to take effect during the intermediate days of the Sukkot holiday. It remains unclear whether the Ministry of Economy plans to intervene or request adjustments to the new tariffs.
