Hackers Claim Data Breach of Thousands of FBI Employees
The cybercrime group ShinyHunters claims to have breached FBI systems and obtained sensitive information on thousands of current and former employees. ShinyHunters, an international and vengeful group, primarily operates for financial gain and extortion, and has been active since 2019, known for database breaches.
A Reuters investigation of a file released by the hackers, containing approximately 5,000 records, revealed personal details including names, addresses, phone numbers, birth dates, social security numbers, and emergency contacts. The data also includes information on job roles and sensitive units, with some employees reportedly working on matters related to China, Russia, Iran, and Hezbollah, as well as cyber, surveillance, and human intelligence.
According to the hackers, the exposed data is only a small portion of a larger database estimated to be between two and three terabytes. They allege possession of additional information concerning recruitment processes, background checks, contracts, and sensitive medical data of agents.
Eric O'Neill, a former FBI counterintelligence officer, described the alleged data as a "goldmine for foreign intelligence services," suggesting China would be particularly interested in identifying individuals working against it. However, O'Neill cautioned that it is too early to determine the full extent of the information held by the hackers.
The FBI has acknowledged awareness of the cyber group's claim regarding a breach of the FBIJobs.gov recruitment portal and is investigating the potential compromise of personal employee information. The FBI stated that the cause of the breach is currently unknown and that the matter is being actively and intensely investigated.
