Rabies Alert Issued After Infected Puppy Found Near West Bank Settlement

Israel's Ministry of Health has issued an urgent warning after an infected puppy was discovered on Road 450, near the settlement of Neve Tzuf (also known as Halmish) in the West Bank. The puppy, described as white with brown spots, was found heading from the direction of the settlement of Nachliel.

One person is known to have had contact with the infected animal, and an epidemiological investigation is ongoing. The Ministry is urging anyone who came into contact with the puppy or any stray animals in the area between September 9 and September 23, 2026, to immediately contact the Health Bureau in Ramla or their local health office for an assessment of preventative rabies treatment. No appointment is necessary, and individuals should go to a hospital emergency room after working hours or on weekends.

The Ministry is specifically asking parents to check with their children if they encountered the puppy or other stray animals and to seek medical advice if necessary. Pet owners whose animals may have had contact with the infected puppy are advised to consult their local veterinarian. The public is also urged to share this information with anyone who was in the area or nearby settlements during the specified period.

In the event of a bite or scratch from an animal, the Ministry advises immediate washing of the wound with soap and running water for approximately 10 minutes, followed by disinfection and prompt contact with the Health Bureau for a rabies prevention assessment.
