Jerusalem Fire Engulfs Synagogue, Destroys 10 Torah Scrolls Amidst Extremist Abuse

A significant fire broke out in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Mea Shearim on Wednesday evening, destroying at least 10 Torah scrolls and causing extensive damage to a building. During the emergency response, individuals described as extremists reportedly hurled verbal abuse and insults at the firefighters and police officers working to contain the blaze and rescue the sacred texts.

The Jerusalem Police reported that officers secured the scene and assisted in the removal of the Torah scrolls from the burning structure. While there were no reported injuries, the building sustained considerable damage. The police stated that during their efforts to maintain public order and ensure safety, several individuals directed "hateful and derogatory calls" towards the emergency personnel.

The fire, which began around 6 p.m. on Shaarei Pinah Street, rapidly intensified, with flames engulfing the roof and exterior walls, producing a large plume of smoke. Firefighters and rescue teams rushed to the scene to check for trapped individuals and provide assistance.

After a tense period of firefighting, it was confirmed that no one was trapped in the apartments. However, the condition of the rescued Torah scrolls was described as "not easy" due to the significant damage they sustained. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, and the scene has been cordoned off to allow professionals to complete their work.
