Hapoel Tel Aviv Basketball Team Excited for EuroLeague Season Opener in Sofia

Hapoel Tel Aviv is set to begin its 2026/27 EuroLeague campaign with a home game against Bayern Munich, following a successful debut season that saw them reach the playoffs. The team will play its "home" game in Sofia, Bulgaria, as they continue to be unable to play in Tel Aviv. The team's roster has seen several changes over the summer.

Ahead of the season opener, player Zach LeDay expressed enthusiasm for the start of the "real thing" after the preseason concluded. "We want to start and set the tone, and play Hapoel's basketball," LeDay stated, emphasizing the team's readiness and desire to establish their playing style early in the marathon season. He also noted Bayern Munich's offensive strength and fast pace, highlighting the need for Hapoel to focus on their own game.

Head coach Dimitris Itoudis shared the team's excitement for the new season, acknowledging their preference to play in Tel Aviv but expressing gratitude for Sofia's hospitality. "We are very excited to start another season. We of course want to play in our home, in Tel Aviv, but we are happy that Sofia is hosting us again. We really hope to return to Israel," Itoudis said. He described Bayern as an experienced and rebuilt team, noting that Hapoel is still working on finding its chemistry and balance, and must learn from past mistakes.

Itoudis also addressed the adjusted game time, a result of club efforts to accommodate local fans, schools, and families. He recognized the dedication of fans who travel to Sofia to support the team and expressed a hope for peace, which would allow their return to Israel. The coach stressed the importance of starting the season with a win, calling it a long marathon. He reflected on the previous season's successes and shortcomings, vowing not to repeat mistakes, especially given the increased competition and significant investments made by other teams in their rosters.
