Syrian President Calls on Israel to Change Approach for Peace

Syrian President Ahmed al-Shar'a, addressing the UN General Assembly, stated that Damascus is ready for peace but requires Israel to alter its strategy. He also strongly condemned Israeli actions within Syrian territory, asserting that while Syria reintegrates into the international community, Israel continues to launch strikes. Al-Shar'a described these actions, including hundreds of airstrikes, detentions, and incursions, as contrary to global trends and reminiscent of a bygone era.

The Syrian leader demanded the withdrawal of Israeli forces from a buffer zone in southern Syria, where they entered following the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime in late 2024. Al-Shar'a reiterated Syria's claim to the Golan Heights, captured by Israel in 1967 and annexed in 1981, declaring, "The Golan will remain Syrian territory."

Al-Shar'a emphasized that the potential for peaceful coexistence exists for those who desire a just peace that upholds everyone's rights. He contrasted this with Israel's ongoing military operations on Syrian land.
