Palestinians Sentenced to Nearly Six Years for Arson Attack on Israeli Settlers

Three Palestinians have been sentenced to 70 months in prison, equivalent to nearly six years, for throwing Molotov cocktails at a caravan inhabited by four Israeli settlers in the West Bank outpost of Givat Oz Zion. The attack occurred on the night of April 22-23, 2021, when at least one of the firebombs penetrated the caravan and ignited, waking the sleeping residents who managed to escape unharmed. The convicted individuals, identified as Migdad Halmi Mousa Barakat, Mahmoud Sultan Khalil Alnabat, and Jihad Ahmed Afon Baraka, all residents of the village of Burqa, claimed they were targeting the caravan because they believed it was on land belonging to their families. The military court in Judea did not accept the prosecution's argument that the attack was motivated by nationalism, stating instead that the primary motive appeared to be a dispute over land and revenge for perceived trespassing. However, the court acknowledged that the decision to target settlers was made with the clear knowledge of who they were. The legal aid organization Honenu, representing the victims, criticized the sentence as too lenient and has appealed to the military prosecution to seek a harsher punishment. Attorney Haim Bleicher of Honenu argued that the court's characterization of the incident as a mere land dispute, rather than an act of terrorism against Jewish people, undermines deterrence and the spirit of Israelis. He emphasized the severity of the attack, which could have resulted in the deaths of an entire Jewish family, including infants, and stated that the current sentence is excessively light, especially in the context of ongoing conflict.
