Israel's Supreme Court Delays Decision on October 7th Investigation Commission

The Supreme Court of Israel has postponed a decision regarding the establishment of a state commission to investigate the events of October 7, 2023. The government has been granted until January 15, 2027, to provide updated information on its plans for probing the causes and consequences of the Hamas invasion. This effectively means that no ruling on the state commission will be made before the upcoming elections, scheduled for October 27.

The government had previously informed the court that it did not have sufficient time to pass legislation for its own investigative commission before the Knesset's dissolution and the election call. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu opposes the creation of a state commission, expressing concerns that a court-appointed body might be biased against the government. Instead, the cabinet proposed an alternative investigation mechanism, with its composition and powers to be determined by politicians.

The demand for a state commission remains a key requirement for the families of those killed in the attack and for several political factions. Opposition representatives have stated their intention to form such a commission once they come to power.
